Voting is one of the most important civic rights given to American citizens, and one pregnant couple took that mantra to heart when they went into labor a little earlier than expected – by stopping by the voting booth before they went to the hospital.
The due date for Colorado couple Sosha Adelstein and Max Brandel’s first child was significant: Election Day. But, baby girl Bella Rose decided she wanted to witness history first-hand, and Adelstein went into labor around 1:30 a.m. on Friday instead.
The couple waited until the morning to head to the hospital, but on the way they rushed over to the Boulder County Clerk and Recorder’s Office to drop off their ballots, Boulder News reported.
It was so obvious that Adelstein was in labor that even the election judge could tell she was about to give birth, said Boulder County spokeswoman Mircalla Wozniak. The couple took a photo at the voting booth’s “selfie station” before finally heading to the hospital.
Wozniak said the county “always” encourages “voting by any means.”
“This is a great reason to vote early if you are in labor,” she said.
Turns out, voting was the easy part. But, Brandel said his wife was doing well during the birth and was “really proud” of her.
On Saturday, Brandel posted a photo to Facebook showing his wife glowing as she holds their first child.
The couple revealed they voted for Hillary Clinton.
“It’s really important for us to bring our girl into a world we are proud of,” Brandel said. “We hope people realize the risks inherent in this election and get out and vote.”
