A waiter received the tip of a lifetime earlier this month when a whopping $750 was given by a generous customer who wanted to help the waiter return home to visit family in his native Ireland.
The story surrounding 22-year-old waiter Ben Millar has gone viral in recent days after his pregnant girlfriend, Taryn Keith, posted a photo of the customer’s receipt on her Facebook page. She expressed gratitude in an accompanying message and said the money will help the two eventually take their baby to Ireland to meet Millar’s family.
“My boyfriend got this tip last night at work. He’s from Ireland and is trying to take us back there once Killian is born so we can meet his family,” Keith wrote. “Thought I would share it to show everyone that there is not only hate out there. Truly blessed.”
The photo shows that a customer named Jeffrey added the $750 tip to his $122.87 bill along with a note that read, “Hopefully this can get you back to Ireland for the holidays.” It was an act of kindness that truly took Millar by surprise.
Millar said the gift was given after he served Jeffrey and his family inside a restaurant in Houston, Texas, and learned during conversation that Jeffrey frequently visits Ireland.
“I jokingly said, ‘I wish I could go back that often to see my family,'” Millar told ABC News. “I thought nothing of it, and we all joked after. The night went on, and I proceeded to give good service and talk to them.”
But it was later when Millar checked the receipt that he was in for a big surprise, noticing the kind note and that generous gift Jeffrey and his family left behind. Considering Millar hasn’t seen his relatives in Ireland for the past two years, he’s elated that he will be able to save the money so that he and his girlfriend can visit his family after their baby arrives.
“I also hope I can reach out to Jeffrey so he knows how much I appreciate it,” Millar told ABC News. “It means a lot to me, but more to my family back home who will benefit from seeing me again since almost two years.”
Keith told the Huffington Post she’s expecting her baby in late January.
