A couple who battled cancer together will now battle the regular trials and tribulations of life together instead after they were finally married over the weekend.
There wasn’t a dry eye in the room as New Jersey resident Ashley Wood walked down the aisle to her partner of 11 years, Kevin Sochanchak, WPVI reported. Wood herself fought back tears as she approached her husband-to-be.
Years ago, the couple had won an all-expenses paid wedding as part of a contest put on by Adelphia Restaurant in Deptford Township.
But, the luck-of-the-draw wedding was postponed after Wood was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2011. Three years later, the bad luck continued when Sochanchak was diagnosed with stage four stomach and esophageal cancer.
He was only given six months to live.
After years of strenuous cancer therapies, the couple finally tied the knot. Sochanchak said the thought of one day marrying Wood is what got him through the toughest of days.
The bridesmaids wore burgundy floor-length dresses and carried sunflowers as they watched Wood and Sochanchak exchange vows.
The couple looked ecstatic as they kissed, finalizing their ceremonial union, and walked out back down the aisle – healthy and hand-in-hand.
