An Alaska woman recently found herself in a complete panic after the diamond in her wedding ring went missing while she was eating at a local restaurant, prompting the entire staff of the establishment to try and help her find the precious stone.
Rachel Saldana was shocked when she noticed the diamond was missing during a dinner meeting last Wednesday with friends at the Carlos Mexican Restaurant in Anchorage, Alaska; the group was planning a fundraiser for the Alaska Miss Amazing Pageant for girls who have disabilities, KTUU-TV reported.
Everyone immediately pitched in to try and find it, but to no avail, as Saldana left the restaurant that night assuming she had seen the last of her diamond.
“My heart just sank,” she told the outlet.
Little did she know, though, that a turn of events — and the goodness of the restaurant staff — would end up yielding a happy ending to what appeared to be a pretty depressing and hopeless situation.
As it turns out, Patricia Christophersen, an employee of the restaurant who busses tables, promised Saldana that she would keep looking for the diamond. And, after Saldana left, she made good on that promise, again searching the bathroom, where she saw Saldana go to change her baby’s diaper before the stone went missing.
“I checked it one last time, after my other buser had cleaned that bathroom,” Christophersen told KTUU-TV. “And miraculously, it was right behind the door, like, right behind the door on the ground!”
At that point, Christophersen — who is reportedly homeless and staying at a friend’s paint shop, and who was recently involved in a car wreck that has left her car damaged — could have simply pocketed the diamond and pawned it off, but she said she’d never do such a thing. Instead, she immediately called Saldana and told her the good news.
“I always think about karma, and if it were me, I’d want somebody to return it to me,” Christophersen said of the incident. “If it’s not rightfully yours, don’t take it. If you want something, ask for it. The worst that somebody can say is no, and then work for it if you really want it.”
She added, “It just felt good to do something right.”
In the end, Saldana was blown away by Christophersen’s honesty, and was obviously overjoyed that the diamond was recovered. She and her husband offered Christophersen a cash reward, and praised the woman’s decision to give back the stone.
“She could have completely taken that diamond and sold it at a pawn shop, or wherever, to make a little extra cash, to be able to take care of things going on in her life,” she said. “So the fact that she was so honest, and had so much integrity to contact me back and return it, was really amazing.”
