Olympic gold medalist Carly Patterson has announced that she and her husband, Mark, are expecting their first child — a “miracle” that came after the couple struggled for quite some time to conceive.
Patterson, a 29-year-old gymnast who competed in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, took to her Instagram account this week to announce the exciting news, invoking God, prayer and a touching Bible verse.

“Those closest to us know we have struggled to get pregnant for quite some time and were wondering if this would ever happen for us,” Patterson wrote. “Thankfully, God has answered our prayers and Baby Caldwell is due October 2017!”
The athlete expressed her excitement and joy over what she described as the couple’s “little miracle” and said that they can’t wait to embark on the “journey of parenthood.”
Patterson closed her announcement with a Bible verse as well: 1 Samuel 1:27. It reads, “For this child I have prayed and the Lord has granted the desires of my heart.”
