Three years ago, Courtney and Tom Gilmour became foster parents to Janielle, 12, and Elijah, 10. It wasn’t long before the two decided that they were ready to adopt. The toughest part, however, was figuring out how to tell the kids.
The Glimours finally decided they would reveal the exciting news during a family vacation to Disney World in Orlando, Florida.

Just before they left, Courtney Gilmour was able to confirm the exact adoption date. That’s when she decided to add another fun twist.
“I thought, ‘How cool would it be for Mickey to hold up a sign telling the kids?'” Gilmour told WHBQ-TV.
Once they arrived in Orlando, Gilmour shared her plan on Twitter. After seeing her post, Walt Disney World arranged special meet and greet with Mickey Mouse himself.
Gilmour recently posted the video of the life-changing moment to her Facebook page.
“I shared the video because I want to continue to draw attention to foster care and adoption,” she told WHBQ. “Being a former foster child myself and now a foster/adopt mother, it’s very important we don’t forget there is lots of help needed.”
In the clip, Mickey first greets the children and performs a card trick. Finally, while the three pose for a photo, the children are presented with a sign that lists their official adoption date.
The news caused both children to break down in tears of joy as Mickey and their new parents came in for a group hug.
Gilmour described Janielle and Elijah’s adoption day as “very emotional, but perfect.”
“We had lots of friends and family there and was just joyous,” she said.
In just a few days, Gilmour’s video has received nearly 20,000 shares and more than 2 million views on Facebook.
Speaking to WHBQ, she shared a message for couples looking to adopt or become foster parents: “Focus on the positive of the process. It’s super hard at times, but it is super rewarding.”
