Doctors and nurses are calling a Texas toddler’s survival after a near-drowning a “miracle.”
Whitaker Harris fell into his parents’ pool last week on his first birthday, after his family’s dog reportedly pushed open a back door and the tiny boy followed the pooch outside.
After discovering the child, Whitaker’s mother, Nickie, and his grandfather administered CPR while waiting for paramedics.
Things initially weren’t looking so good for Whitaker once he arrived to Cook Children’s Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas, with medical professionals telling his parents that he had a slim chance of survival, according to KDFW-TV. But that didn’t stop them from trying.
“Doctors were honest, but still amazing and helpful and went above and beyond,” Nickie Harris told the outlet.
In the end, God had other plans, and Whitaker was sitting up and smiling just two days after the horrific near-drowning. It was a series of events that the boy’s dad, Jarred Harris, called “humbling.”
“When you see things he does afterward you’re just, you’re very humbling to how God really is and how thankful you can be,” he said.

Nickie and Jarred Harris are hoping to use the experience to help other families avoid something similar from happening to their children. While the ending to their story was a happy one, not all families are so lucky.
