“The View” co-host Sunny Hostin — an admitted pro-life Democrat — said during Tuesday’s show that evangelicals and Catholics “get caught up on the abortion issue,” and, instead, broke down what she believes Christians should be more focused on.
“My point is, everybody sort of gets caught up, especially evangelicals and Catholics as well and people of — Christians get caught up on the abortion issue,” she said. “But if you really are a faithful person, if you really are a follower of the Bible and a follower of Jesus, again, the most important issues are justice and mercy.
Hostin continued, “The most important issues are caring for the poor, welcoming strangers, caring for our Earth.”
These comments came after fellow co-host Whoopi Goldberg said that those who oppose abortion on moral grounds “never have to have one.” While the law doesn’t mandate that people terminate pregnancies, Goldberg said the government won’t stand in the way of those who wish to have one — a sentiment she agrees with.
Hostin also said that she believes Democrats should embrace the “faithful community” and admitted during the segment that she faces some backlash over her pro-life views, considering her Democratic allegiance.
Additionally, she offered up some advice for Democrats and Republicans, alike.
“I’ve got to tell you it’s time for Democrats to realize: there’s no moral party. The Republicans should not have the corner on setting the moral objective for the country,” she said. “It’s time for Democrats to embrace — because if you really are looking at Jesus’ words, the most important things to him were justice and mercy, so real biblical sort of perspectives are saving the earth, welcoming strangers, taking care of the poor.”
