Actress and author Sam Sorbo is on a mission to help parents and families who desperately want to instill biblical values in their children despite being entangled in the midst of a cultural era that makes doing so increasingly difficult.
Sorbo, author of the new book, “Teach from Love: School Year Devotional for Families Paperback,” believes that many schools — and particularly public schools — are missing at least two essential ingredients: God and morality.
“I’ll tell you what’s missing from the public schools: God,” she said in a recent interview with Faithwire. “They’re teaching children that children are accidents, that human beings are accidents, that life is accidental, which means that life has no meaning and then they’re teaching them survival of the fittest.”
Sorbo said that “Teach From Love” — a book that is described as “an inspirational and educational devotional for families to explore and embrace the godly qualities we want for our kids (and for ourselves)” — was originally intended for homeschool families, but that the final text is perfect for teachers and parents of kids who attend all types of schools.
The book is divided into daily devotions that extend for 36 weeks, with each including scripture, prayer, a reading and two questions aimed at sparking a family discussion. Sorbo said she’s hoping that the book will help families navigate the difficulties that they face in school settings.
“[In so many schools] we disavow God, we ignore God, we actually teach things that are antithetical to a belief in God,” Sorbo said. “And I find this very dangerous.”
She continued, “The only way to have a free society is to have a morally principled society.”
Sorbo said teachers are “fantastic,” but lamented the fact that they are unfortunately working in a system that “doesn’t serve the kids” – one that she said treats them like they are items on a conveyer belt.
“We basically say, ‘Okay, children are like machines,'” she said. “You just put stuff in them and then you pass them on to the next grade.”
Sorbo, who has three children with her husband — fellow actor Kevin Sorbo — said that she homeschools her kids in an effort to offer them a Christian upbringing, an experience that allows her to teach them a biblical worldview.
“I teach my children that basically all things lead to God,” she said. “Science is the exploration of God. So is mathematics.”
She’s hoping to help other families bring kids this same experience through “Teach From Love.” Find out more about the book here.
