Grammy-nominated singer Tori Kelly dove deep into her Christian faith in a recently published interview with Icswitch, proclaiming that it is “everything” to her.
Kelly, 24, explained how her own personal faith developed as she got older — and offered a lens into what it’s like to be a Christian working in a secular industry known for embracing values that, in many ways, run counter to a faith narrative.
“You kind of get to a point where your faith really becomes your own and it’s not about what your parents say or what they believe, but its really like, ‘No, this is real to me,'” she said, explaining that she reads her Bible and prays daily. “I’ve really experienced the presence of God and I know that this is my own faith.”
Perhaps most notably, Kelly was open and honest about the struggles between her faith and the values embraced in the entertainment industry. Rather than lose sight of what matters, she said she reminds herself every day that “Jesus is number one.”
“There’s that conviction,” she said. “Certain opportunities will come up and I’ll just have to say no.”
Kelly’s biggest and most terrifying challenge is being sure to keep that perspective, as she said that the industry is “built up to be all about me.” And, as a Christian, she knows that’s neither good nor healthy, so she works diligently to keep perspective.
“My faith is everything to me,” she said.
