A police officer in Albuquerque, New Mexico, has become the ultimate hero after adopting an opioid-addicted baby from a homeless and drug-addicted woman who was in dire need.

The story started back in September when Officer Ryan Holets stumbled upon Crystal Champ and another man about to shoot up heroin. But it wasn’t just the drugs that Holets observed, as Champ was visibly pregnant.
The cop was shocked by the sight. After he learned that she was eight months along, he warned her, “You’re going to kill your baby,” as he was entirely taken aback by what he was observing. Meanwhile, Champ broke down in tears.
“It’s not everyday that I see a sight like that,” Holets told CNN’s “New Day.” “And it just made me really sad.”
Then, the officer had an idea that suddenly crept into his mind — one that he believes came directly from God: he and his wife, Rebecca, would adopt Champ’s baby.
“I just felt God telling me, ‘Tell her that you will do it because you can,'” he said.

Three weeks later, Holets adopted baby Hope. The infant was born drug-addicted on Oct. 12, but is now doing well. As for Holets, he’s happy that he was able to step in and help in a seemingly hopeless situation.
“I’ve gotten tired of seeing so many situations when I want to help, but can’t,” he said. “I was led by God to take the chance. God brought us all together. I really don’t have any other way to explain it.”
Rebecca, too, said that she and her husband felt “called” by God to adopt; the couple already had four children, including a 10-month-old at the time. While they planned to do so sometime in the future, those plans were clearly expedited.
Unfortunately, while Hope now has a loving home, Champ continues to be addicted to drugs and is living on the streets. Through tears, she told CNN that she knows she is a “horrible” person, but that she just wants her baby to have a loving home.
“We did not give her up because we didn’t want her,” she said.
Prayers up for Champ, baby Hope and the Holets family.
