Shaquille Dixon was arrested on Thursday by the Broward County Sheriff’s Office after his mom, Ramona Gordon, saw video of an 81-year-old woman being carjacked at gunpoint by three youths in a Walmart parking lot and was faced with an unthinkable choice.
“I turned my son in. I do not condone anything like this,” Gordon told WSVN-TV. “When I saw it, he wasn’t aware that he was on TV. I called the police right away and had them come and get him.”
She added that she believes her son “needs to learn.”
The carjacking unfolded on Jan. 15, when a group of young boys followed the elderly woman into Walmart and then out to her car, pointing a gun and her and demanding her keys.
She handed the keys over and the boys nearly hit her with the vehicle as they pulled out of the parking lot, WFOR-TV reported.
“My answer was, ‘Why?’ — and smiling. ‘Give me the key!'” the woman, whose name has been concealed to protect her, recounted in an interview with the outlet. “I was friendly because I thought, ‘That’s kids.'”
The victim also lamented the behavior of the children and worried about their own futures.
“Where are we going, where is the future for that kind of kids. Terrible,” she said. “And that upset me from that moment when that happened, it upset me. But I am getting better.”
Police arrested Dixon on Jan. 19 and are reportedly still looking for the other two suspects, but Gordon noted that the additional suspects might be her son’s friends from grade school.
Gordon made her horror over the incident known, reminding her son that the elderly woman that the group carjacked is the same age as his grandmother.
