Every week, one New Jersey woman reaches into her pocketbook and helps a customer in need. This time, she happened to help a man worth an estimated $75 million.
Ruth Reed said she ran into the man — whom she later discovered to be country superstar Keith Urban — at a Wawa gas station in Medford and offered him a $5 bill after she overheard him ask the woman he was with for a few dollars to pay for his snacks.
Reed, a substitute teacher, said Urban thanked her for her kind gesture and introduced himself as Keith, prompting the woman to tell him he looked like Keith Urban, The Associated Press reported.
The “Blue Ain’t Your Color” singer told Reed who he was, but she didn’t immediately believe him, asking if his wife, actor Nicole Kidman, was with him. She was not around, but Urban introduced Reed to the woman he was with as his sister.
A still skeptical Reed then asked the nearby bodyguard if Urban really was who he was claiming to be.
In a Facebook post about the encounter, Reed explained she decided three years ago to pay someone’s bill at Wawa once a week, according to The Daily Mail. The teacher said she finally realized the man she was helping was Urban after she talked with a man from his security detail.
“It was then I realized what an idiot I was,” Reed wrote. “He graciously allowed me to get my picture taken with him. Another Ruth Reed moment!”
Urban is currently touring the U.S. as part of his Graffiti U tour.
