In an emotional on court interview following Cleveland’s stunning upset of the Golden State Warriors in Game 7 of the NBA Finals last night, Lebron James shared some interesting insights into how they managed to pull off the win.
First, let’s quickly address the flawed part of his commentary. During the interview, Lebron lamented that God always seems to give him “the hardest” role in life. Now, most humans who have ever existed will argue that being Lebron James isn’t exactly the hard knock life. He’s a world-famous NBA superstar and arguably the best player on the entire planet making gazillions of dollars – this is a yoke most of us would be willing to carry.
But we’ll forgive Lebron for the grandiose hyperbole. It was a pretty epic win, so the emotion is understandable. Besides, James did share some worry insights into how his team was able to overcome the odds and a 3-1 series deficit, something no NBA team had ever done in the finals before.
After referring to “the Man upstairs,” which presumably is God and not some mysterious unnamed person living upstairs in Lebron’s mansion, James said the secret to the turnaround was to ditch the “why me” attitude, remain positive and trust in God:
“Against all odds. I don’t know why we want to take the hardest road. I don’t know why the Man above gives me the hardest road, but there’s nothing the Man above don’t put you in situations that you can’t handle. And I just kept that same positive attitude like, instead of saying ‘why me’ I was saying ‘this is what he wants me to do’ and, uh… Cleveland! This is for you!'”
