Their honeymoon will be one they never forget, but for reasons much more somber than most newlyweds.
Steven Nabil and his wife were waiting for their connecting flight back to New York when a terrorist attack was launched. Steven wrote about the horrifying ordeal on Twitter. He was getting food while his wife sat at Nero Cafe, when three attackers began firing guns throughout the Ataturk airport.
Nabil instinctively went to find his wife shield her from the attack and made it just in time. He tweeted:
“I ran back, got my wife, pulled her to store, broke in and waited in terror while he was shooting outside the store. We barely made it.
“Came down the stairs to see the court empty and the terrorist firing toward us. Sitting ducks.”
“The 45 minutes we were sitting ducks waiting to find out who will open the door.
Steven said at one point he was almost face to face with the attackers. They eventually managed to hunker down in the closet of a nearby store.
“In the closet I was begging my wife to keep calm because the noise might draw any attackers around.”
From when the attack began to when their safety was assured totaled about 45 minutes. Steven called those the ‘longest 45 minutes ever’.
