Tim Tebow, former NFL quarterback turned baseball player stands up for his desire to pursue his dream of playing professional baseball.
The newly minted outfielder was signed to the New York Mets minor league this past September and just released a new book titled: Shaken.
In Tebow’s fifteen minute segment on ESPN’s “First Take” he spoke with Stephen A. Smith about his transition to his new game.
“If you haven’t played a sport in over a decade, your chances of success in that particular sport are limited — whereas with football, because you clearly have that ‘it’ factor, and there are other things you can do on a football field other than play quarterback, your chances of success seem to be greater in football than baseball, so what’s wrong with somebody looking at you and saying, that’s what you should be doing?” Smith asked.
Tebow speaking from Arizona, delivers an inspiring response:
“It is fine if they look at me and say that’s what I should be doing” Tebow started. “But they’re not me. And when are dreams based on chances? Dreams are based on something that is in your heart, that are passions, that are something that you want to go try.”
He continued, “I mean, I’m so grateful I even get to pursue something even if it is a long shot verse something that, yeah I might be able to go do it and do it pretty well, but if it is not in my heart, why am I going to go do that? That is something unfortunate in society that has a lot of people go do what they should do and live with the status quo and live by all of these rules, this is going to be okay, just go and accept your average 9-5 instead of striving for something.”
“The ultimate goal isn’t to succeed or fail,” Tebow added. “The ultimate goal is to give it everything you have for something that’s on your heart and a dream, and pursuing that and if you get to live out your dream every single day, then the result doesn’t matter.”
“I can look back twenty or thirty years from now and be able to look at this time and say, ‘you know what, I gave everything I had to football, I gave everything I had to baseball and I was able to live out some dreams. In my opinion, that’s pretty awesome.”
