President-elect Donald Trump responded to actress Meryl Streep’s excoriating Golden Globes rebuke in a series of tweets early Monday, calling the Academy Award-winning performer “one of the most overrated actresses in Hollywood.”
Trump, who is known for hitting back at critics via social media, said Streep doesn’t know him, yet “attacked” him during the televised awards show on Sunday night during her acceptance speech for The Cecil B. DeMille Award.
Streep, who used the majority of her six-minute address to slam Trump, quickly made headlines, with her remarks going almost instantly viral. While some supported her remarks and heralded her as a hero, others disagreed.
The actress specifically spoke about the importance of foreigners in Hollywood and went after some of Trump’s purported antics in light of his presidential win:
“There was one performance this year that stunned me. It, it sank its hooks in my heart. Not because it was good … there was nothing good about it. But it was effective, and it did its job,” she said. “It made its intended audience laugh and show their teeth. It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter, someone he outranked in privilege, power, and the capacity to fight back.”
Streep continued, “It — it kind of broke my heart when I saw it. And I still can’t get it out of my head, because it wasn’t in a movie. It was real life.”
Trump, of course, didn’t ignore these remarks. In addition to calling Streep overrated, he dubbed her a “flunky” of former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, and defended himself against the infamous claim that he once mocked a disabled reporter. You can read about claim that here and here.
“For the 100th time, I never ‘mocked’ a disabled reporter (would never do that) but simply showed him ‘groveling’ when he totally changed a 16 year old story that he had written in order to make me look bad,” Trump tweeted on Monday morning. “Just more very dishonest media!”

Kellyanne Conway, senior advisor to Trump, also weighed in on the controversy, saying Streep could have used her voice to discuss other issues during her acceptance speech.
“I’m glad Meryl Streep has such a passion for the disabled because I didn’t hear her weigh in or I didn’t even hear her use her platform last night … to give the shoutout to the mentally challenged boy who last week was tortured live on Facebook for half an hour, by four young African-American adults who were screaming racial and anti-Trump expletives and forcing him to put his head in toilet water,” she said during a Monday morning appearance on Fox News.
