A Detroit church is planning to celebrate Good Friday in a truly unique way, offering hundreds of locals free gas and no-charge oil changes — an effort that will likely cost the church around $10,000.
It’s an annual event called the “10K Gas Giveaway” that is held by New Life Family Church, with the house of worship offering people free fuel at a local BP gas station and free oil changes at a business called City Oil Change starting at 9 a.m. on Friday.

These services will be given on a first-come, first-serve basis.
“New Life Family Church is gearing up to be a blessing to the city of Detroit in a major way and the only explanation we have is #BlameJesus!” the church proclaimed in a Facebook post.
The overarching goal? Serve up to 500 people by not only offering them gas and oil, but by also checking in on their spiritual health.
“People won’t even have to get out of their cars while our teams are pumping their gas,” Pastor Welton Smith of New Life Family Church told WWJ-TV. “We’re also going to be kind of ministering to them, checking on them. Some people may need prayer or something.”
He continued, “We’re just really going to do something pleasant for our city during Jesus Weekend, and that’s really all it’s about.”
According to The Detroit News, this is the church’s second annual “10K Gas Giveaway” event, with Smith further explaining in a statement to the outlet that his house of worship wanted to not only celebrate Jesus but to also “demonstrate him as well.”
“Our ministry is full of young adults who love Detroit and are always willing to do what it takes to love on their own,” the pastor said. “Emulating our love for Christ, we proudly blame Jesus for doing what we do.”
