On Tuesday, Dominic Baccus told Fox 13 that he was in the middle of a dream when his cute little pup, Buddy, woke him up around 2 am.
When Baccus first opened his eyes, he had no real clue why his furry friend decided to wake him up, but it didn’t take long to notice his apartment filling up with smoke.
He immediately got up and fled to the back door of his apartment in a two-story condo building to leave with his dog. But when he attempted to do so, he saw that his whole building was engulfed in flames.
But instead of freaking out, Baccus grabbed a few valuables – wallet, dog leash, phone – and decided to go directly through the blazing inferno that was his front door.
“My entire house was full of smoke and I saw it was starting to take my entire neighbor’s house down. Buddy was scared and was trying to run away back into the house so I knew I needed to get him on his leash.”
Once outside to safety, he looked back and saw the horrific sight of his home in flames, which were so large they were higher than the treetops.
Hillsborough County firefighters said they were able to put the fire out in under 30 minutes on Tuesday night. But eight units were destroyed due to the large flames. Now local families, including Baccus and his pup, are without a home.
But that is of little concern to Baccus. He’s just grateful that his dog woke him up and that he’s alive.
