Christian Coats just planned on running a quick errand to Walmart. But instead of being able to get in and out, he spotted a well-known and wanted criminal and ended up tackling him to the ground, KATU reported.
Jared Walter is known in the Portland, Oregon area as the “TriMet Barber” for his Edward Scissorhands like actions — putting scissors up his sleeve and using them on public buses to cut random women’s hair.
Since 2007, Walter has been arrested multiple times. His previous charges include harassment and interfering with public transportation, even his mother living in Texas said that her son shouldn’t be “free” to “roam in the public.”
Coats immediately recognized Walter while in Walmart and began engaging in conversation in hopes of keeping him occupied until police could be notified.
Coats said, at the time, “I was trying to be friendly with him.”
Walter sensed something was amiss and decided to make a run for it. He hauled off down the aisles and out of the store in an effort to escape. Coats gave pursuit, and ended up finding him “hiding behind [a] chimney. I knew I had him, and he knew I had him too.”
After less than a minute, police arrived on the scene and took over.
Coats explained that he couldn’t sit by and do nothing, because Watershed is a sex offender. “Sometimes you just have to take risks like that because that could have been my mom, it could have been one of my kids, so sometimes you just have to act.”
