Memorial Day has come to be known as the unofficial kickoff of summer, with many Americans enjoying a three-day weekend filled with trips to the beach and backyard barbecues. In the midst of the fun and festivities, however, the United States Marine Corp posted a video on its Facebook page on Friday that is a sobering reminder of what we observe today.

Titled “Honor The Fallen,” the 90-second viral clip has been viewed some four million times. It depicts the events leading up to the moment when soldiers present the family of a fallen service member with an American flag. The video ends with the heartbreaking words of gratitude that are imparted to gold star families:
“On behalf of the president of the United States, the United States Marine Corp, and a grateful nation, please accept this flag as a symbol of our appreciation for your loved one’s honorable and faithful service.”
In an effort to remember the true cost of our freedom and purpose of Memorial Day, the Marine Corp reminded viewers that this weekend is “for the fallen and anyone who has ever heard these words.”
