An Air Force veteran and his daughter were heartbroken to discover that the American flags that he had recently assembled outside of his home in San Antonio, Texas, had been stolen — and they assumed the worst might have happened.
But when a neighbor approached them with video footage of how the miniature flags disappeared, their despair quickly turned to roaring laughter.
The reason? The flags were actually taken by some crafty squirrels, with the neighbor catching the comical ordeal on video.
Footage shows two squirrels desperately attempting to rip the flags off of their tiny poles. Despite facing a bit of a challenge, the two were determined and, in the end, were able to capture the tiny flags, leaving the sticks behind.
But Jennifer Northam didn’t know any of those details when she discovered that her dad’s beloved display was dilapidated; she was disheartened, wondering if someone — a malicious human being and not a clueless animal — had intentionally ripped off the flags.
“It wasn’t like it had just fallen off. Both of us were kind of heartbroken,” she told KABB-TV. “We were just confused because we’re new to the neighborhood. We didn’t know if somebody did it — or what happened.”
It was soon after that neighbor Devin Rivera-Duque emerged with the hilarious video.
Watch the clip below:
“I saw her with the first flag. I was just freaked out. The second and third flag, I just started recording her,” Rivera-Duque said, adding that the squirrels used the 10 tiny flags to make a nest.
In the end, Northam was relieved to find out that the thieves were a pair of squirrels and not locals, creating a happy ending of sorts.
