In an emotional 2012 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Grammy-winning recording artist Fergie opened about her struggle with drug addiction and how turning to her Christian faith ultimately saved her life.
“My brain had been playing a lot of tricks on me… I started getting really paranoid,” she told Winfrey in an episode of Oprah’s Next Chapter. “So I went one day into this church and I thought that the FBI and the SWAT teams were outside the church.”
In that moment, she had a conversation with God that led her to get the help she needed for her addiction.
“So I had a conversation with God and I said, ‘Alright, if I go out there and the FBI and the SWAT team’s not out there, then it’s the drugs and I’m stopping.’ I went outside of the church and there was no SWAT team, there was no FBI, just me and God,” she explained. “And I kept my promise. That day. That was it.”
In recent weeks, Fergie and her family have been seen attending church services in Los Angeles. She and her husband, actor Josh Duhamel, were raised Catholic, and in December 2013, Fergie and Duhamel celebrated their now three-year-old son Axl’s baptism with close family and friends at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Brentwood, California.
While Fergie and Duhamel do not often speak out about their faith, the Black Eyed Peas singer told AZ Central in a 2014 interview that she is so grateful for her family.
“I’m so blessed to have the husband I have,” she said.
