Benjamin Houston is not just an ordinary Domino’s pizza delivery guy. When his car broke down while en route to a delivery, he didn’t just give up.
No, he went above and beyond and walked the pizza the rest of the way – a more impressive feat when learning he was walking through a rough area at night. Oh, and he’s also deaf.
Houston walked to deliver the pizzas and soda Ashley Schafer ordered, doing so in the middle of the night.
Houston fulfilled Schafer’s delivery in Flint, Michigan, acknowledging “the area where I live is not safe for people to walk, especially a deaf person.” The story was picked up by outlets as far away as FOX 31, a Denver affiliate. Fortunately, Houston didn’t have any issues during the half-mile trip on foot.
The manager of that Domino’s location, Ben Peterson, had nothing but praise for his dedicated employee. “Houston went above and beyond what they recommend a delivery driver do if they have car trouble but that’s in his nature,” mlive.com reported, also noting that Houston has worked there for only about two months, and is also a maintenance worker at McDonald’s.
Schafer ordered so she could have the pizza with her husband, who works third shift, and their two young daughters, for breakfast. She too expressed her thanks and recognition for a job well done.
Not long after the mid-July pizza delivery, she shared her experience on Facebook, linking to a Go Fund Me page she started for Houston.
Schafer recounted the out of the ordinary pizza delivery on the Go Fund Me page description, describing how Houston “delivered to me a few times and was always very nice” and that her “faith in humanity was restored… all because of pizza.” She continued:
It might seem silly, but in a world that right now feels tumultuous and full of hate and in a city where itself and it’s people are constantly put down, there was this bright light that was Ben. He went far above and beyond, caring more about getting me a stupid pizza then staying at his car and waiting for help. Whether he needs help to keep him on the road doing such a good job or new shoes for when he goes above and beyond, Ben deserves recognition and ease of mind for being such a quality human being so let’s help this guy out in any way we can!
Houston credited God when telling mlive.com why he went through such lengths to make the delivery:
God wants us to treat everybody how we wanted to be treated. I would do it again with anybody really. If my car had broken down in the middle of I-75, I would do it again. I would do my best to get close, one way or another.
So far Schafer’s Facebook post has had over 160 shares, with over $10,000 raised of the $13,000 goal.
