When 8-year-old Faith Emirhan, who has Down Syndrome, wanted to pursue wrestling, how could anyone turn him down? These situations can be tricky, however, because you need to match students with those at their own level and ensure no one gets hurt.
After two years of practicing the sport, it was time for some competition. Emirhan apparently loves his wrestling coach, Ali Burak Toy — and Toy wanted to provide his student with the experience of winning a real match.
The two took to the floor for a recent competition, complete with the traditional raising of hands and meeting with the judge before beginning the match. After getting into position, facing one another on the mat, the fight began at the whistle’s bellow.
Toy modified his moves and Emirhan was able to “take down” his coach several times, ultimately winning the match. Each time the little boy conquered a move, his joy and excitement was palpable on the floor. He was clearly delighted at his success and ready for the next round.
After the fight, Coach Toy picked up his victorious student to take him over to the judge’s table for a medal presentation. As they walked across the gym, multiple photographers snapped photos and people got to their feet to congratulate the young athlete.
Emirhan’s awe at his own success and the attention he got for winning the match was the definition of adorable. What a beautiful gift this coach gave to his hard-working student!
