It’s a rare occurrence to see people from both sides of the political aisle coalesce around an issue or cause, but that’s exactly what all five of America’s living former presidents are doing in the wake of Hurricane Harvey.
In fact, the former commanders-in-chief — George W. Bush, Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, Jimmy Carter and George H.W. Bush — have launched the “One America Appeal” to raise funds for recovery.
“The former presidents were inspired to come together in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, which unleashed devastating flooding — and spurred thousands of first responders and neighbors into action,” a statement reads. “More than one million people have been displaced by Harvey, which has caused up to $180 billion in damages to over 200,000 homes.”
As part of the campaign, the presidents also released a joint commercial aimed at drumming up interest in helping hurricane victims. Clinton said in the ad that Hurricane Harvey ushered in destruction but “brought out the best in humanity.”
“People are hurting down here, but as one Texan put it, ‘we’ve got more love in Texas than water,'” George W. Bush said, with his father, George H.W. Bush, adding, “We love you, Texas.”
