Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is making headlines today over an unfortunate internet hoopla involving his Twitter account.
Here’s how it all went down: Ted Cruz’s official account “liked” a pornographic post, the Internet noticed and people went wild.
The situation quickly became a news story, as it took well over half an hour for someone on Cruz’s team to remove the post from his page.
The central question, of course, was: Who liked the post in the middle of the night? According to Cruz, it was a member of his team. The Republican senator, who said the entire ordeal was a “mistake,” offered up a fairly detailed explanation, Politico reported.
“There are a number of people on the team who have access on the account. It appears that someone inadvertently hit the like button. When we discovered the post, which was I guess an hour or two later, we pulled it down,” Cruz said. “It was a staffing issue. And it was inadvertent, it was a mistake. It was not a deliberate act.”
He continued, “We’re dealing with it internally, but it was a mistake. It was not malicious.”
Last night, Catherine Frazier, Cruz’s senior communications advisor, posted a message on her own Twitter account noting that the “offensive tweet” had been “removed by staff and reported to Twitter.” The post was only “liked” under Cruz’s name for about an hour before its removal, but Frazier’s comments leave yet another question open: Why was the post “reported” to Twitter?

That, too, remains unanswered, but the pornographic Twitter account that housed the initial tweet changed its bio after the hoopla to include the line, “Watch the same porn @SenTedCruz watches.”
For his part, Cruz — who declined to name the staffer in question — tried to quip about the unfortunate incident.
“This was not how I envisioned waking up this morning,” he said. “Although, I will say that if I had known that this would trend so quickly, that perhaps we should have posted something like this during the Indiana primary.”

When asked “So it wasn’t you?” his did not affirm, he said instead: “It was a staffing issue and it was inadvertent. It was a mistake.”
There has been no shortage of commentary, jokes and other related responses over Cruz’s Twitter flap.
But, perhaps the best path forward at this juncture to follow the advice as well as the question presented in Matthew 7: “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?”
