A horrific story has emerged from California, where a McDonald’s cashier is accused of delivering her baby at work and attempting to flush the newborn boy down the toilet.
Sarah Lockner, 25, who is due in court next Monday, is being held on $11 million bail over the claim that she tried to kill the newborn while at work at a McDonald’s restaurant in Redwood City, California, on Labor Day.
The alleged details of the purported attempted murder are grisly, but co-workers reportedly said that Lockner complained of stomach pain on Sept. 4 and went to the bathroom several times.
When they went to check in on her, at least one person reported seeing blood and a baby.
“There was a newborn baby boy in the toilet water,” San Mateo County District Attorney Stephen Wagstaffe told KTVU-TV.
Wagstaffe said that Lockner reportedly tried to push the baby’s face into the water in an effort to kill him. Co-workers apparently jumped into action, though, calling police and emergency workers who performed CPR after realizing that the baby had no pulse or heartbeat — and rushed the infant to the hospital.
But, despite a dire prognosis, the district attorney said that a miracle might be afoot.
“We were told chances of survival were not strong,” Wagstaffe told the outlet. “Somehow with the grace of God people there were able to help the baby and the baby boy is now conscious and it looks like he will survive.”
It is unclear what brain damage, if any, the baby sustained, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Wagstaffe expressed horror over the case, as did customers that frequent the restaurant.
Lockner reportedly has another child as well. She has been charged with attempted murder, inflicting great bodily injury and felony child abuse. Prosecutors said she claimed she didn’t know she was pregnant.
