A pregnant mom recently went into total hero mode when her vehicle became submerged in a man-made lake and quickly started sinking.
Heather Vaden didn’t have much time to process what was unfolding on Wednesday morning, as she was forced to kick out the window, swim and then run for help — all while rescuing her 2-year-old son in the process.
The scary ordeal unfolded after Vaden swerved her SUV to avoid hitting a dog, and ended up in the midst of the harrowing ordeal.
“I just swerved and I think I hit a ditch which then bounced us up,” she told KMOV-TV. “I know we hit the fence and then we went straight into the water.”
Vaden quickly looked for something to shatter the window, but to no avail. So, she took action.
“I just kept kicking the window and finally it broke out,” she said.
Once she got her and her son out of the car, she swam 20 to 30 feet — all with a broken arm — to safety. Her husband happened to be driving; he dove into the water to try and save his family, not realizing that they were already out of the water.
In the end, though, everything worked out.
“Thank God we are all safe and who cares about all the other stuff. We’re safe, we got out,” she said. “So, that’s what I’m thankful for this year.”
