Don and Julie Myers were forced to flee their home in Ventura County as the flames began to encroach. When they returned a few days later, they were met with a sight that strikes fear into every homeowner -their property had been completely burned to the ground.
They had lost everything. The couple began to sift through the ashes, attempting to salvage a few of their possessions. They weren’t having much luck when Don stumbled upon something extraordinary – his wife’s wedding ring.
Don, overcome with emotion, got down on one knee and proposed to Julie right there and then. As a result of this incredible find, and despite their circumstances, the pair is in “good spirits,” KEYT reported.
In a bizarre twist, an almost identical situation unfolded in the life of another California couple who had their $900,000 home razed to the ground in the fierce inferno.
Donna and Mike McKendry, of Ventura, lost almost everything. But when Donna headed to the property to thumb through the ruins, she stumbled upon her family’s wedding rings.
“I found my mom’s original wedding rings. I’m really glad,’ Donna told Fox 11 at the home, overcome with emotion. “It’s not in great condition, but I’m gonna have it for the rest of my life.”
Donna and Mike dearly loved their home. To see it all burned to the ground in a matter of hours was a lot to take in. However, the couple insists that the bewildering experience has led them to rethink their priorities in life and to focus more on the things that really matter.
“What was important before, isn’t so much now. It puts things into a new perspective,” Donna told the news station.
“Right now, we’re just trying to grasp the whole situation.”
