British rapper Stormzy has performed his faith-filled hit “Blinded By Your Grace” at the funeral of a fan’s father after the man’s son “tried his luck” by reaching out to the singer on Twitter.
Nasir Bockarie’s dad died on the day of his son’s graduation. The grieving man thought he would ask Stormzy if there was any chance he could perform the song at the funeral. He didn’t expect a reply from Stormzy, who has over a million followers on Twitter.
“Don’t worry if you can’t,” he added in the heartfelt message. To his surprise, he received a tweet back from the star rapper: “Follow me so I can dm ya.”
Bro my Dad passed away on the day of my graduation last week Friday. Our favourite song of yours was blinded by your grace. Would love it if you could preform this at his funeral next Thursday 21st December. Don’t worry if you can’t, I just thought I’d try my luck 🙏🏾 #Hopeful

After the pair exchanged private messages, Nasir posted a message saying: “All done bro! I’m actually speechless, praise God for humanity.”
As it turned out, Stormzy honored the fan’s wish and performed the track at the funeral earlier this month. What an amazing guy!
Nasir’s cousin Mariama Kallon tweeted: “I’m still in shock that Stormzy is coming to perform at my uncle’s funeral tomorrow. I don’t want to hear any slander about this man ever because I don’t know many people who have a soul to match his.”
Massive respect for @Stormzy1 for honouring this…God Bless You 🙏🏾 pic.twitter.com/Ad3w2Bsawh

The lyrics to the song, which is tipped to be Christmas number one, are absolutely stunning:
“Lord, I’ve been broken
Although I’m not worthy
You fixed me, I’m blinded
By your grace
You came and saved me
Lord, I’ve been broken
Although I’m not worthy
You fixed me, now I’m blinded
By your grace
You came and saved meI’m blinded by your grace
I’m blinded by your grace, by your grace”
“We try to find the positive out of everything and that can be hard at funerals, especially with younger family members,” Kallon said of the occasion, as reported by the BBC. “We did the best to give my uncle a memorable send-off and of course Stormzy really made that happen. We’re so grateful and our family will be praying for him always.”
For his part, Stormzy spoke at the funeral and expressed what an honor it was to be able to sing there.
“I just want to say it is an honor to be here today — to do my bit to make this service special,” the rapper said as he took to the stage at the funeral.
The wonderfully hopeful track is clearly having a powerful effect on many.
