Jeffrey Agan Sr. had just one wish for this Christmas – another shot at marriage to his ex-wife and the only true love of his life.
Just three years after his divorce and only six months after he started talking to his ex-wife again, Agan dropped to one knee to propose all over again during their family’s annual Christmas weekend gathering.
Jeffery, a 52-year-old registered nurse, even penned a poem to his soulmate, entitled “Love Burns Anew.” As his ex-wife Lorrie read the beautiful work in front of their huge extended family, Jeff presented her with a ring. “Yes, yes yes!” Lorrie screamed as the two embraced and burst into tears. “I love you!” she kept saying. “So many people are going through painful experiences,” Jeff Agan Jr. told TODAY. “So, I think what’s touched so many people about this video is there’s definite proof with this video that true love exists.
And that true love eventually will find its way — sometimes it just takes a little while and there might be a couple of detours.”
But the man himself explained how he was almost overcome with nerves as the big moment approached. “I was incredibly nervous, more so than I would have expected,” Jeff Sr. said by phone. “I was thankful I had the poem to speak for me so I didn’t have to say too much.”
The pair were previously married for 26 years, before divorcing in 2014. Eventually, however, they started talking again.
“Our family was torn apart for a long time,” recalled Jeff Jr to TODAY. “I think its because they both took the opportunity to work on themselves and find themselves on their own path.”
The younger Jeff revealed that he harbored some reservations about his father’s plans to re-propose, fearing that their second marriage would not last long.
“Initially, I was terrified,” said Jeff Jr. “But every ounce of doubt and fear went away when I read what was going on in the room (on Friday morning). As soon as he had her placed in the middle of the room, I knew something was up.
“He looked really nervous. I thought, ‘I know what you’re doing dad.'”
After spontaneously catching the stunning moment on Camera, Jeff explained how he was completely overwhelmed by the response to the footage on social media.
“I was just blown away, I had to (do a) double-take at first,” he said. “I had hundreds of direct messages in my Twitter, and dozens of text messages and phone messages on my phone.”
Since the clip went viral, Jeff Jr has now set up a GoFundMe campaign to ask for donations towards Jeff and Lorrie’s wedding.
“This go fund me is in response to a tweet I made, sharing a video of my father’s engagement proposal to my mother. When I made the tweet, sharing this video, I anticipated about 6 favorites from close friends. My whole family is overwhelmed with gratitude! Several people have responded, requesting a way to contribute to pay for my parents new wedding!” he wrote on the page.
Then, Jeff revealed some details from the couple’s first marriage:
“My parents both came from nothing. Their first wedding was televised and at an electronics store, because they were too poor for a traditional wedding. They raised 8 children, including myself. Each with unique desires and talents. They have made EVERY sacrifice for their kids. When their marriage failed, our whole family was devastated and torn apart. Years went by, with fights and slick comments being waged from both sides.”
But that was not the end of their story:
“Then, redemption. Both of my parents each went on a separate journey for self-renewal. My dad started going to the gym and lost a ton of weight. He started writing poetry and spending more time with his grandkids. My mother found peace in nature, through meditation, and self-empowerment. My dad was a truck driver for 20 years, went back to school, and got his RN and now works 60 hour weeks at University of Toledo Medical Center.
My mother struggles to keep jobs due to health complications, but is very passionate about taking care of people. She used to work in a nursing home, and would spend hours after work sitting with patients who were crossing to the other side. My point being, I have two really awesome parents. Who have sacrificed so much of themselves for their families. I want to give back in one way, to give them the dream wedding every couple desires. A perfect conclusion to a beautiful, and very true story.”
The campaign has already exceeded its goal of $2,000, much to Jeff’s delight:
“Thank you all so much for your contributions! Holy smokes my family is overwhelmed that we met our $2000 goal! My family is blessed and overwhelmed.
We wish you all a happy holidays, and feel free to keep following on Twitter. You might forget us in the coming months, but when we share updates in the future you won’t want to miss it!
Thank you again so much!
-Jeffrey Agan Jr”
