A married couple from Indiana has revealed that they are both battling life-threatening medical conditions at the very same time. In a shocking turn of events, Elizabeth and Scott Quinby have both require lengthy medical treatment after being diagnosed with serious illnesses.
Elizabeth is suffering from a rare form of blood cancer and Scott has just been given his own grim diagnosis; Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis – a life-threatening immunodeficiency. Scott has spent years working hard to make ends meet as his wife’s sickness began to progress.
“He was wonderful,” said Elizabeth, as reported by Fox 59. “He worked his butt off. He took care of everything.”
Now, Scott is without a job and gravely unwell himself. “I miss him,” said Elizabeth. “He’s just not the man that he used to be, sitting in the hospital. I’m terrified he’ll never come home.”
Just over a month ago, Scott was admitted to hospital with a high fever. His diagnosis was a lung infection called histoplasmosis. It quickly triggered doctors to notice his rare condition, Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis or HLH.
Due to their horrendous circumstances, the couple are finding their finances spiraling out of control as the medical bills rack up. “A lot of stuff is yeah, stacking up fast,” said Elizabeth. “It hit hard. It hit really hard.”
Friends of the couple have set up a GoFundMe campaign to help them meet their mounting payments and ease some of the financial pressure. The page details the current situation:
“Our dear friend Scott Quinby was admitted to the hospital last Monday evening very sick with Histoplasmosis which went into a rare condition called HLH. Scott will need chemo treatment but is to weak to start treatment as of now. He will be in the hospital for 4 weeks treating the Histoplasmosis and then 8 weeks of chemo.
We are setting the GoFundMe to help with medical expenses and to pay their rent. His wife, Elizabeth also has blood cancer and not able to work and Scott lost his job a couple of weeks ago.”
The most recent update on the couple’s situation was posted six days ago and reads:
“Thank you for all donations and support. This is turning out to be a very successful campaign. Elizabeth and Scott are good friends of ours. Elizabeth and I met a few years ago when our kids were taking dance lessons. We also meet every Wednesday for Bible Study.
Because we are close friends, my husband David and I were aware of their financial needs and health issues so we decide to set up the GoFundMe to help them out. The way we have it set up a deposit is made weekly into our account and then we write a checks for that amount to Elizabeth and she deposits the check into her bank account.
We are so grateful for the donations, prayers, and support.”
Messages of support and prayer have been flooding the GoFundMe page – at this time, over $10,000 has been raised.
“Liz, sending love and prayers for Scott, your beautiful daughter, your family, and the entire medical team. Blessings!” one person wrote. “Praying for God’s mercy & blessings for both of you. Miracles happen everyday,” another added.
“Love you guys so much! Hugs and prayers.”
