A little boy recently shocked his mother when he made one of the most selfless proclamations imaginable.
It turns out the mom and her 10-year-old son, Dez, were talking about active shooter situations and whether his school had practiced what he and his class would do if such a scenario came to fruition, according to Love What Matters.
“Have you guys practiced a lockdown drill in class yet?” the mom recalled asking, to which her son responded, “Yes, we practiced it.”
But it’s what came next that led the mom to get emotional, feeling as though she had a lump in her throat, after her son recounted what he and his classmates would specifically do.
“The teacher is suppose to shut and lock the door, put the black paper over the window on the door. Then myself and three other boys are supposed to push the table against the door,” Dez said. “After that, all the class is going to stand behind us on the back wall.”
His mother, who recounted her exchange with her son in a post shared with Love What Matters, was confused as to why he and three other boys would be standing in front of the rest of their class, and she was especially concerned seeing as he is just one of two black kids out of the class of 23. So, she asked why he was picked to be in front.
“I didn’t get picked. I volunteered to push the table and protect my friends,” he said. “If it came down to it I would rather be the one that died protecting my friends then have an entire class die and I be the only one that lived.”
His mom was stunned to hear her young son say such a thing and lamented that kids today are forced to make these considerations amid a slew of school shootings.
“Father God, it took everything out of me not to breakdown,” she said.
In the end, though, this loving mom should be proud that her son so sacrificially responded; many others would think too deeply about themselves to make such a bold decision. Major props to Dez.
