Former President George H.W. Bush, 93, is recovering after he was hospitalized in an intensive care unit Sunday in Houston, his spokesperson said in a statement.
Bush’s hospitalization came just one day after the funeral of his wife of more than seven decades, Barbara Bush.
Not long after Barbara’s death, Americans began discussing whether the former president, who has been hospitalized several times in recent years for respiratory problems, would soon follow, citing Takotsubo syndrome, also known as “broken heart syndrome.”
Bush is responding to treatments and is eager to get to his summer home in Kennebunkport, Maine, spokesman Ken McGrath said, according to the Associated Press.
“He’s the most goal-oriented person on this planet,” McGrath added.
Barbara Bush died last week at the age of 92 after opting to not receive further medical treatments, instead choosing to pass comfortably at her Houston home, surrounded by family.
Her husband attended her funeral wearing his signature printed socks, this time adorned with multi-colored books to honor Barbara Bush’s life work of promoting literacy.

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said in his eulogy Saturday that it was not previously disclosed that his father had been hospitalized at the same time his mother was in the hospital for the last time.
“I think Dad got sick on purpose so that he could be with her,” he said.
