A group of loyal customers has vowed to buy out all the stock from a California doughnut shop so that it’s owner can spend more time with his sick wife. John Chhan and his wife, Stella, have owned Donut City in Seal Beach for some three decades, becoming a staple of the Orange County community. But recently, Stella suffered an aneurysm and was unable to work behind the counter anymore. That’s when the shop’s compassionate regulars bandied together to help the business owners.

Chhan declined the offer of a GoFundMe account, so the customers had to come up with an even more cunning plan, instead choosing to ramp up the size of their orders. They’ve since been clearing out all the stock before the day is out, so that John can visit his wife in rehab as soon as possible. “She can talk, she can write,” Chhan said of his wife’s recovery. “Right now she’s trying to start…eat something.”
As for now, those supporting this small local business are attempting to spread the word about their cause through newsletters and word of mouth. Their advice to potential donut enthusiasts is that they order the sweet treats a dozen at a time to help Chhan get back to his wife before the close of business.
“Hey come and support this guy’s donuts,” one customer told CBS Los Angeles. “He’s a great man, great cause.”
“It’s a blessing really,” the customer added. “We need more people like that to just help everybody out in whatever need they have.”
John told FOX 11 he “appreciates it very much” and that Stella seems to be “doing better.”
