An elderly man started the new year with a new lease on life after he was pulled from a burning car on the first day of 2019.
The vehicle the 70-year-old was driving was struck by a car traveling the wrong way on Texas State Highway 358 in Corpus Christi just after 5 a.m. on New Year’s Day, causing it to flip on its side and catch fire, according to the Corpus Christi Police Department.

Dramatic dash cam video shows several good Samaritans and police officers working to push the car, which was fully engulfed in flames, back onto its wheels.

After the car is right-side up again, the rescuers then work to extract the man from the car.
“I got a sledge hammer,” one officer says before running to retrieve it.
The man would not have survived without the help of the good Samaritans, police said.
“The efforts from the officers and civilians are commended for saving the life of the 70-year-old male, who is believed would not have survived without their heroic efforts,” the police department wrote on Facebook.
