Ahead of their much-anticipated Christian wedding ceremony, Justin and Hailey Bieber have revealed that they remained celibate until becoming officially married last year.
In a cover interview with Vogue magazine, the Biebers, both outspoken Christians, explained the spiritual reasons behind their courageous decision.
Justin Bieber Won’t Get a Prenup Because Divorce ‘Isn’t an Option’
“He [God] doesn’t ask us not to have sex for him because he wants rules and stuff,” Justin told Vogue. “He’s like, ‘I’m trying to protect you from hurt and pain.’ I think sex can cause a lot of pain. Sometimes people have sex because they don’t feel good enough. Because they lack self-worth. Women do that, and guys do that.”
“I wanted to rededicate myself to God in that way because I really felt it was better for the condition of my soul,” Bieber added, noting that he, at one stage, had something of an addiction to sex.
“And I believe that God blessed me with Hailey as a result. There are perks. You get rewarded for good behavior,” he said.
After reconnecting with his former girlfriend Hailey last June, Bieber said he quickly realized what he was missing.
“When I saw her last June, I just forgot how much I loved her and how much I missed her and how much of a positive impact she made on my life,” the “Sorry” singer recalled. “I was like, ‘Holy cow, this is what I’ve been looking for.’”
After briefly dating three years ago, the couple had something of a dramatic breakup, and refused to talk to each other for a number of months. However, their involvement in church always seemed to bring them back together on good terms.
“The common denominator, I promise you, is always church,” Hailey said of their numerous reunions.
Then, after attending a gathering at LA-based Vous Church, Justin finally made the big move.
“By the end of the conference, he was like, ‘We’re not going to be friends.’ I was like, ‘We’re not?’” Hailey recalled.
Less than a month later, the pop star proposed and Hailey joyfully accepted.
Bieber has always been very open about his faith in Jesus, regularly posting Bible verses, Christian imagery and spiritual wisdom to his social media platforms. The number of people he reaches through Instagram alone? 104 million.

“I believe in the story of Jesus—that’s the simplicity of what I believe,” Bieber told Vogue, adding that he does not believe in “all the religious elitism and pretentiousness,” such as when people think they are “better than you because they come to church.”
“I get sensitive when religion comes up because it’s been so hurtful to a lot of people. I don’t want to be thought of as someone who stands for any of the injustice that religion has done and does do,” he added.
Justin, by his own admission, had some wild years prior to meeting Hailey, who is a professional model and the daughter of actor Stephen Baldwin.
Thankfully, he had enough close and loyal friends who were willing to get involved in the grittiness of his life and love him unconditionally. Following stints in the homes of various pastors and mentors, Bieber was ready to straighten up his act completely. There is no wonder, then, that his wife Hailey unashamedly calls him a “walking miracle.”
