A new trailer has been released for a much-anticipated movie depicting the story of Mary Magdalene and her relationship with Jesus. The movie stars Joaquin Phoenix as Jesus Christ and Rooney Mara as Mary. Despite being filmed back in 2016, it is finally ready for release, early next month, in the U.S.
The movie is directed by Garth Davis, who was the brains behind 2016 epic, “Lion.”
Originally slated to be released in 2017 by The Weinstein Company, the movie was put on the backburner when movie executive Harvey Weinstein was accused of sexual abuse. Eventually, IFC Films picked it up and agreed to release it in April of this year.
The official film summary reads:
“For the first time, the incredible story of Mary Magdalene is told through her own eyes. In the first century A.D., the free-spirited Mary (Rooney Mara) flees the marriage her family has arranged for her, finding refuge and a sense of purpose in a radical new movement led by the charismatic, rabble-rousing preacher Jesus (Joaquin Phoenix). The sole woman among his band of disciples, Mary defies the prejudices of a patriarchal society as she undergoes a profound spiritual awakening and finds herself at the center of an earth-shaking historical moment.”
Mary Magdalene is a significant biblical figure who is often referred to as the “thirteenth disciple.” She traveled with Jesus during much of his ministry and was a witness at his death, burial and resurrection.
“Mary Magdalene” is due to hit theaters April 12.
