The iconic Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France, erupted in flames Monday. The reason for the blaze remains unclear, but images and video posted on social media show a raging fire burning from the top of the historic place of worship and major tourist destination, with large clouds of smoke filling the Paris skyline.
France 24 reported that the roof had “entirely collapsed.”
French President Emmanuel Macron tweeted Monday, saying that his thoughts go out to all Catholics and all French citizens. He noted that he was “sad tonight to see this part of us burn.”
The cause of the sudden inferno remains unclear, though Catholic churches in Paris have frequently been the subject of vandalism in recent months.
“This is already a sorrowful Holy Week,” tweeted pro-life writer and speaker Obianuju Ekeocha.
