A little girl is being hailed as a hero after successfully caring for her two-month-old baby brother following the violent death of their parents.
The Los Angeles Police Department said that officers discovered the two young children, ages three and two months, alive on April 14, some three days after the dad allegedly shot and killed his wife before turning the gun on himself.
The incident occurred in the Chatsworth neighborhood of Los Angeles.
“Our little angel was able to keep herself and her brother alive,” explained Los Angeles Police Capt. Maureen Ryan at a press conference Tuesday, according to ABC News. “The baby is a miracle baby and the little girl is a hero. She’s an absolute hero.”
LAPD Detective Bob Dinlocker said the police were only alerted to the situation when a concerned grandfather called it in.
“The officers went out, they did their welfare check, and didn’t find anything unusual,” said Dinlocker at a news conference Tuesday, according to Los Angeles Daily News.
Worried and eager to personally verify the welfare of the kids, neighbors Olivia and James Robinson decided to call the real estate agent and gain access to the home. It was at this point they discovered the horrific scene and found the kids shocked and dehydrated.
“She obviously was in bad condition because she reeked really bad of urine,'” Olivia said of the young girl, according to the Daily Mail. “And she had more of a blank stare on her face. She was very, very quiet.”
Both children were taken to the hospital for observation before being assigned to the care of Child Protective Services. They are now said to be “thriving.”
Do pray for these dear kids as they recover from such a traumatic event.
