Mark Lowry, the comedian and gospel singer known best for writing “Mary, Did You Know,” was traveling last week through the small airport in Lynchburg, Virginia, when he came across a pilot eager to share his own musical talents.
American Airlines pilot David Bennett “asked me if I wanted to hear him play the piano,” Lowry wrote on YouTube. “Of course, I did. He sat down at a piano in the airport lobby and this is what happened.”
When the pair approached the colorful piano in the humble airport’s entryway, Bennett immediately impressed Lowry with his obvious talent as he began playing his own rendition of the beloved hymn “Just a Closer Walk with Thee.”
Based on Lowry’s expressions — as well as the compliments he gave Bennett — the Christian singer-songwriter was impressed by the pilot’s piano-playing skills.
As he crooned away on the piano, Lowry, who was singing along to the hymn, told the pilot, “You’ve got a swing in it, don’t you?”
The former Gaither Vocal Band member asked Bennett where he learned to play piano and if he had ever played for a Gospel group. He told Lowry he used to play for the Sounds of Liberty, a vocal group from Liberty University.
“You played for the Sounds of Liberty? You didn’t play like that for the Sounds of Liberty,” joked Lowry, also a graduate of Liberty University.
