Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) — who has been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 — shot back at a reporter Wednesday who asked the lawmaker to put his mask back on.
“Yeah, when I’m talking to the TV camera, I’m not going to wear a mask, and all of us have been immunized,” Cruz replied.

The journalist pushed back again, saying it would make reporters “feel better” if he wore a mask.
“You’re welcome to step away if you like,” Cruz said. He went on to note that the “whole point of a vaccine” is so he — and the American people — can return to normal life and stop wearing masks.
In a similar situation last fall, Cruz was asked to put his mask back on before he addressed the media. In response, he said that he wouldn’t wear a mask while he spoke for TV and said he was maintaining a 6-foot distance between himself and reporters around him, which is in adherence to guidelines put forward by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Several conservatives on social media were quick to point out that White House press secretary Jen Psaki has held daily briefings, during which she does not wear a mask. In response to questions about her decision, Psaki has said, “If health and medical experts told me I should wear a mask while I was briefing, I would do it. But I am following the guidelines they are giving us, as is the president.”
It’s worth noting that, on Thursday, during his first press conference since taking office, President Joe Biden — who is also vaccinated — did not wear a mask.
