On Monday, hundreds of supporters flooded the parking lot of the New York hospital where rapper DMX is on life support.
The family of DMX, whose real name is Earl Simmons, asked for prayers as they hope for a miracle after the rapper reportedly suffered a heart attack some outlets have linked to a possible drug overdose.
Simmons was admitted to the White Plains hospital last Friday.
News of his hospitalization comes more than a year after he announced in October 2019 he would be canceling a number of planned concerts in order to return to a drug rehab facility.
At the time, DMX said via his Instagram account he check himself into the center and thanked his fans “for their continued support.”
“We ask that you please keep Earl/DMX and us in your thoughts, wishes, and prayers as well as respect our privacy as we face these challenges,” his family said in a statement released this week.
He was still in a coma and breathing through a ventilator as of Sunday.
Several celebrities chimed in on social media with well wishes:
In recent years, Simmons has become more outspoken about his faith.
He hosted a Bible study via Instagram Live shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic began, using the platform to discuss Scripture.
“At the end of the day, at the beginning of the day,” he said, “it’s going to be God’s will. If you try to understand why He does what He does, you’re just going to end up with a headache. Just do the right thing.”
In February, the rapper debuted a single titled “Prayer.”
