After 27 years of marriage, Bill Gates and his wife, Melinda, announced via social media Monday they are splitting up.
The couple said in a joint statement they decided to end their marriage “after a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship.”
“Over the last 27 years, we have raised three incredible children and build a foundation that works all over the world to enable people to lead healthy, productive lives,” they said.
They went on to say they plan to continue collaborating on the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which they founded in 2000.
As far as the reason for their divorce, the pair said they “no longer believe we can grow together as a couple in this next phase of our lives.”
The Gates’ foundation is the largest private charitable organization in the world and Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft, is worth an estimates $130.5 billion, according to Forbes.
