Meghan McCain, the lone conservative voice on ABC’s “The View,” ripped Dr. Anthony Fauci on Friday, arguing the infectious disease expert “clearly wanted to be a Kardashian.”
She accused Biden’s chief medical adviser of capitalizing on the media’s desire to turn him into a celebrity amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Show panelist Sara Haines claimed it “was very clear” Fauci “wasn’t comfortable with” the fame and journalists’ fanfare of him.
The 36-year-old McCain saw it very differently, though.
“I don’t think people that are uncomfortable with celebrity and don’t want to be celebrities pose on the cover of ‘In Style’ magazine in a fashion spread and on the cover of ‘People’ magazine,” she asserted. “I’m sorry, but if he just wanted to be a scientist — part of the criticism of him going forward is that he clearly wanted to be a Kardashian.”
Fauci, for his part, told People he sees his fame as “amusing” and “surrealistic.”
McCain also called Fauci out for being so dismissive of the idea that the virus came from a potential lab leak. In May of last year, he told National Geographic the evidence “is very, very strongly leaning toward this could not have been artificially or deliberately manipulated” in a lab.

In late May, Fauci announced he’d changed his mind, telling PolitiFact reporter Katie Sanders he is “not convinced” COVID-19 “developed naturally” and said the issue needs to be investigated.
Almost immediately after, he flip-flopped on the issue again, telling CBS News correspondent Weijia Jiang he believes it’s “highly likely” the coronavirus developed naturally before spreading from animals to humans.
“We have to understand where the virus originated from if we’re ever going to, God forbid, face a threat like this going forward,” McCain said. “There’s a huge crisis in this country with Republicans and Democrats questioning the legitimacy of our institutions, and having a lack of faith in our government, and the medical community. … If there’s nothing to hide, then show us the proof, and continue the investigations.”
