Two children — innocent bystanders — were caught in the crosshairs of intense gun violence in the Bronx last week when a 13-year-old girl jumped into action to protect her 5-year-old brother from the bullets.
The kids’ parents told WLNY-TV it’s a miracle their children weren’t seriously injured by the gun shots, though they have been severely traumatized.

New York Police Department Chief Rodney Harrison praised the little girl for her heroism in shielding her brother from the gunfire.
“I want to acknowledge the young lady that pretty much saved her brother,” Harrison said. “She pretty much covered him up. I’m not sure what it takes to get the key to the city, but I nominate her.”
The parents said they saw the nightmare-turned-reality unfold right under a window in their Mount Eden home.
An unnamed man opened fire on his 24-year-old male target when the children — Mia and Christian — found themselves trapped in the middle.
Their dad, Christian, said they “have trauma” and can’t sleep.
“They are nervous,” he said. “The boy sleeps on top of me. The girl sleeps by my side.”

Surveillance video caught the entire ordeal on camera. Police have since released photos of an unidentified suspect believed to be the gunman.
On Sunday, the family were special guests at the Yankees game.
“Today, they are guests of the Yankees who stand with them,” the team tweeted.
New York City mayoral candidate Eric Adams said Christian and Mia “will never be the same” and has pledged $2,000 as a reward for the capture of the gunman involved in the shooting.
“We need to catch this [expletive],” he said. “He had a total disregard for those children.”
