The president of Planned Parenthood has come out in support of pop star Britney Spears’ desire to have more children — an irony pointed out by pro-life activist Abby Johnson.
Alexis McGill Johnson, president and CEO of the nation’s largest abortion provider, tweeted the organization stands “in solidarity with Britney and all women who face reproductive coercion.”
“Your reproductive health is your own,” she tweeted, “and no one should make decisions about it for you.”
And in a statement to CBS News, Dr. Krishna Upadhya, vice president of quality care and health equity at Planned Parenthood, described Spears’ experience as “unacceptable and highlights the critical issue of reproductive coercion.”
The situation Upadhya was referring is the conservatorship to which Spears is bound. She has been locked in the agreement for some 13 years.
Spears’ father, Jamie, has controlled his daughter’s $60 million estate since 2008, when the “Oops!… I Did It Again” singer experienced a mental breakdown that ended with her hospitalization.
The younger Spears said she spoke with a judge Wednesday, who told her that, due to the conservatorship, she is not permitted to get married or have a baby.

“I had an [intrauterine device] inside of myself right now so I don’t get pregnant,” she said in a statement. “I wanted to take the IUD out so I could start trying to have another baby, but this so-called team won’t let me go to the doctor to take it out, because they don’t want me to have children, any more children.”
“I deserve to have a life,” Spears continued. “I’ve worked my whole life. I deserve to have a two- or three-year break and just, you know, do what I want to do. But I do feel like there is a crutch here. … And I’m tired of feeling alone. I deserve to have the same rights as anybody does, by having a child, a family, any of those things, and more so.”
Her many years trapped in the conservatorship has left her “traumatized,” she said, adding, “I just want my life back.”
Johnson, a former Planned Parenthood executive who now serves as a pro-life activist, expressed support for Spears and condemned Alexis Johnson for her statement about the entertainer.
“Considering that 73% of women who have abortion feel forced or coerced, and your organization is our country’s largest abortion provider, you should just shut up,” tweeted the pro-life Johnson.
Abby Johnson was referring to a 2017 study that found that 58.3% of women reported having an abortion to make other people happy and 73.8% said they disagreed with the claim that their decision to terminate their pregnancies were made “entirely free from even subtle pressure from others.”
