Tommy Dorfman — an actor known for starring in the Netflix drama “13 Reasons Why” — came out this week as a transgender female.

The 29-year-old celebrity, born a biological male, now identifies as a woman.
Dorfman, who revealed the transition during an interview with Time, has been using the pronouns “she” and “her” over the past year.
“I view today as a reintroduction to me as a woman, having made a transition medically,” the actor said. “Coming out is always viewed as this grand reveal, but I was never not out. Today is about clarity: I am a trans woman.”

The “13 Reasons Why” star chose to wait until having medical work done to come out publicly as transgender, stating an initial unease at the idea of making a formal announcement before undergoing reassignment surgery.
Nevertheless, Dorfman documented the shift on Instagram.
“I recognize that transitioning is beautiful,” the celebrity said. “Why not let the world see what that looks like? So I kept, on Instagram, a diaristic time capsule instead — one that shows a body living in a more fluid space.”
Dorfman plans to keep using the name “Tommy” in honor of a late uncle.
“This is an evolution of Tommy,” the actor noted. “I’m becoming more Tommy.”
In another recent Instagram post, Dorfman wrote about undergoing a laser hair removal procedure to get rid of unwanted chest hair.
Dorfman has also expressed a desire to take on entertainment roles for female actors.
“I’m thinking about how I can infuse my trans body into film and television,” the entertainer said. “Lena Dunham gave me my first role as a girl last year. It was so exciting and validating. And personally, it’s wild to be a 29-year-old going through puberty again. Some days I feel like I’m 14.”
Additionally, Dorfman wants to begin dating as a transgender woman.

After being in a nine-year relationship with a gay man in which Dorfman was seen “as a more male-bodied person,” the actor stated the two have “been learning that, as a trans woman, what I’m interested in is not necessarily reflected in a gay man.”
Dorfman has been married to Peter Zurkuhlen since 2016.
“So we’ve had incredible conversations to redefine our relationship as friends,” Dorfman said. “Transitioning has been liberating and clarifying.”
