A pastor from a church in a city about 60 miles south of Dallas admitted this week he “was wrong” about not getting vaccinated against COVID-19.

Danny Reeves, senior pastor of First Baptist Church in Corsicana, shared his regret with KDFW-TV on the heels of a weeks-long battle against a severe case of COVID-19, an infection that sent him to the intensive care unit at Baylor Medical Center in Dallas.
“God puts us through these moments to teach us the lessons,” he said, referring to his more than 20 days fighting in infection that caused his blood oxygen level to drop to dangerous levels. “I didn’t mean to be cavalier. I didn’t mean to be overconfident. But there’s a lot of people just like me that haven’t gotten the vaccine.”
In early July, Reeves said he began feeling body aches and other known symptoms of COVID-19. He tested positive for the virus a few days later.
The pastor’s breathing became so labored within about a week that he determined he needed to go to the hospital for treatment.
“The doctor came in and said, ‘You’re going to the ICU,’” Reeves recalled. “And [the doctor] said that I needed to have a reality check that I could die.”
He remained in the ICU for two days.
“I cried in here,” Reeves told the local news outlet. “I had emotional moments in here. I had regret in here. I recognized that I had been a bit cavalier. That almost cost me.”

Reeves was treated with Remdesivir and steroids and, thankfully, is making a remarkable recovery — one he credits to his faith in God, his church community, and to the doctors and medical team who helped him.
“I asked them, ‘Why me?’” the preacher remembered. “And they said, ‘Danny, it’s just the luck of the draw, and this can happen to anybody.’ And so, if it can happen to me, it can happen to you. And you really ought to consider getting the vaccine. I’m not going to tell you to go do it; you have the choice and the right to make that choice.”
Now coming out of a severe COVID-19 infection, Reeves has changed his mind. He plans to get vaccinated against the virus once he fully recovers.
“I’ve been taught a lesson,” he said. “And I’m big enough and humble enough to say I was wrong. And if my survival and my story can be a blessing to others, I pray it is.”
